What is a solar cell?

(Today, we will study in detail about solar cells in this post and will know about its benefits and losses.) 


What is a solar cell:The semiconductor device, which converts solar energy into electrical energy, is called solar cells.  They are also called solar photo voltic cells.

In simple words, the solar energy is converted into electrical energy using solar cells.

The first solar cells were built in 1954. Their efficiency was only one percent (1%), which is very low.  Later, as the demand for artificial satellites increased, efforts were constantly made to increase their efficiency and finally got success.  Today, with the use of semiconductors in their manufacture, their efficiency has increased considerably than before.

The efficiency of solar cells made from semiconductors such as silicon, germanium, and gallium varies from ten percent to eighteen percent (10% to 18%), but the efficiency of modern solar cells manufactured by selenium is up to twenty-five percent (25%).

In the above picture, the design of solar cells is shown.  It has a very thin sandwich, which is formed by thin layers of n-type and p-type semiconductors of silicon or gallium.  A U-shape metal grid is installed in it.  The lower lower end of the sandwich is fixed on a metal-base, with a strip attached to it.  The upper part of this semiconductor sandwich is coated with anti-reflecting coating.

advantage of solar cells: 

  1. It converts the sun's rays into legitimate energy at normal temperature. 
  2. It remains noise free. 
  3. It does not cause any kind of pollution. It can be easily moved from one place to another.
  4. This is a very reliable system.
  5. It can be easily connected to electric grid.
  6. Its life is very long.  That is, they have a long life. 
  7. There is no cost in solar energy, it is cost less.
  8. There is very little cost in its maintenance.

disadvantage of solar cells

  1. The production of solar energy is not possible at night.
  2. Solar energy cannot be produced in rain. 
  3. The efficiency of solar cells is very low. 
  4. Solar cells are very expensive.

Applications of solar cells: 

The use of solar cells has proved to be a boon in providing electrical energy in very remote areas (where there is no electricity).  Its important applications are: -

  1. In charging the battery.
  2.  In artificial satellites
  3.  In space vehicles
  4.  For railway and road traffic signals
  5.  In telecommunication centers
  6.  In seasonal research
  7.  as emergency light
  8.  road light
  9.  street light
  10.  calculators etc.
